Magnesium Information

Magnesium is a class of mineral very unique unto itself. There are many experts in the field of health, but we will rely on one who understands magnesium. From his book, Holy Water, Sacred Oil, the Fountain of Youth, Norman Shealy, MD, Ph.D., states the following: "Every known illness is associated with a magnesium deficiency," and further states, "magnesium is the most critical mineral required for electrical stability of every cell in the body. A magnesium deficiency may be responsible for more diseases than any other nutrient."

"Some 350 different enzymes within the body rely on magnesium," says Burton M. Altura, of the State University of New York Health Science Center in Brooklyn, New York. Altura, further states concerning stroke victims, "those who stroked out had the lowest levels of ionized magnesium when they stroked out. Yet, in some cases, the patient's total magnesium concentrations were in the normal ranges." Magnesium is found in lower levels in the blood.
The normal range for magnesium is 1.7 to 2.4 mEq/liter compared to sodium, which is 140 mEq/liter. Thus, the problem of measuring accurate amounts of magnesium in the body is difficult because intracellular magnesium is what needs to be measured. Much of the oral magnesium on the market needs to be converted to ionic form before effective results are manifested. Nano particle ionic form of magnesium goes intracellular, which can eliminate many worries about magnesium levels being low due to poor absorption.

It is not completely clear what long-term damage is being done to the body by having low levels of magnesium.

Magnesium: A Mighty Mineral Indeed! Muscle contraction, glucose metabolism, electrical impulses of the heart, bone formation all rely on this mighty mineral to get the job done! If truth be told, the human body cannot function normally without magnesium. Sometimes when mysterious health symptoms arise it can be time to ask, "Am I magnesium deficient?"

Magnesium: An Essential Mineral! The chief function of magnesium is to activate certain enzymes, especially those related to carbohydrate metabolism. Another role is to maintain the electrical potential across nerve and muscle membranes. It is essential for proper heartbeat and nerve transmission.

Did You Know?

Magnesium is more important than calcium, potassium or sodium as it is required to regulate them. Not many people are aware of the great roll magnesium plays in the proper functioning of the body. After oxygen, water, and basic food magnesium may be the most important element needed by the body. It is so vitally important, yet nearly completely ignored. Magnesium activates over 300 different biochemical reactions for the body to function properly thus making it a very important mineral for the body. Everyone knows the serious consequences from the lack of oxygen, water and food, but very few realize the consequences of magnesium deficiency.

Doctor’s Quote

The following is quoted from the book, NATURAL HORMONE BALANCE by UZZI REISS, M.D./O.B. GYN, published by Pocket Books Copyright 2001 regarding MAGNESIUM deficiencies. Dr. Reiss has a highly successful Beverly Hills practice and prescribes a private label Liquid Ionic Magnesium Concentrate for his patients.

"Yes, we all need calcium for healthy bones, but you won't achieve good bone health without adequate magnesium. Magnesium increases bone elasticity. A deficiency can contribute to osteoporosis. Moreover, magnesium is often the nutritional missing link to menstrual wellness. Some studies have linked PMS to magnesium deficiency alone, on in combination with excess calcium. The mineral is a partner in more than three hundred enzymatic reactions in the body, including the generation of cellular energy and muscle relaxation, and the synthesis of fat, protein, and nucleic acids. The obsession with calcium in our society appears to be a major contributor to magnesium depletion. High intake of calcium interferes with magnesium absorption. In other words it makes an already existing deficiency worse. So we need to hear more than just the calcium message. We need to start hearing the magnesium message."

Introduction to Nano Particle Ionic Magnesium!

Nano particle magnesium was developed by inspiration from God. This product started out as a mistake but it turns out the mistake was a turn of heavenly guidance. When development began on this product, strange events took place inside the research containers being used for this formulation. After being involved in ionics for many years a difference was noticed in the way this product was forming compared to other products that had been formulated previously. Through strange circumstances and many tests, the product was released from research to marketing. The feedback from the product was and has been phenomenal.

What makes Nano Particle Ionic Magnesium unique and divinely inspired is the way the magnesium ions are available for absorption. Notice we say magnesium ions and not milligrams.

What is a Milligram?

Most people are unaware of what a milligram is. Virtually all recommendations for magnesium supplements are given in milligrams. That has been the standard for years. But let's look at what a milligram is in a little more detail.

Few have taken the time to analyze what a milligram really means. A milligram is a unit of mass. What is a unit of mass? From the American Heritage Dictionary we get a definition, which is, mass (m2s) n. 1. A unified body of matter with no specific shape. 2. A grouping of individual parts or elements that compose a unified body of unspecified size or quantity. 3. A large but nonspecific amount or number. 4. The principal part; the majority. 5. The physical volume or bulk of a solid body.

Let's take the components of Part 1: A milligram is a unit of mass, Plus Part 2: which is the physical volume, or bulk of a solid body which would then equal a milligram of magnesium in this case. It should be remembered that most magnesium products are sold as solids or mass particles and not ions.

Now if we take the two parts and put them together what we now have is a bulk amount of magnesium, which weighs a certain amount per a certain volume.

But, knowing magnesium is used by the body in Ionic Form, that from two Noble Prizewinner's, and that ion
channels are how magnesium goes into cells we must look beyond the simple definition of what a milligram is and look at how it is utilized by the body.

Does the magnesium from most magnesium supplements go intracellular in bulk, dry or powder form? No, they must first be converted into liquids. That is correct, the powder that you were taking from another product must ultimately be converted into a liquid form first because it can't go intracellular in powder form.

So, what happens? What is happening is the bulk powder or the milligram of magnesium, is being converted by the body into an ionic solution converted from the powder, bulk or milligram.

If that were not the case, absorption would not happen and thus a very limited amount if any, of mass / milligrams would be utilized by cells. We must further realize the body does not convert most of the magnesium into ions from the powder. That is because of limiting factors such as buffering and ineffective digestive systems.

Looking at Nano Particle Ionic Magnesium, it can be seen and understood that ions of magnesium are what is being absorbed and ultimately not milligrams which are bulk powders.

It is the ionic form of magnesium that is being utilized by the cells and not mass / milligrams or bulk powders.

The following question should be in everyone's mind. Why would I want to take a milligram of a bulk or mass powder that needs to be converted into ions when I can get the perfect solution ready for absorption?

That is the miracle of Nano Particle Ionic Magnesium. It needs no alterations to be absorbed. It goes to the cells directly, where it is needed and utilized.

There is a small portion of society that is aware of the enormous role magnesium plays in body chemistry. Most healthcare professionals do not consider the underlying consequences of low magnesium levels as a consequence to having good health.

Americans are experiencing huge healthcare costs being laid upon them daily, why hasn't the awareness levels of magnesium deficiency become more publicized?
Back

Symptoms of low levels of Magnesium

The following is a list of things we can watch for concerning low levels of magnesium in humans:

Sleep disorders - Insomnia - Fatigue - High Blood pressure - Tensions of the body - PMS - Kidney stones - Bone Spurs - Osteoporosis - Muscle cramps - Irregular heartbeat - Backache - Headache - Irritability - CFS (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, partial in many cases complete) - CVND ( Cardiovascular Nutritional Deficiency) - Depression - Constipation - Lack of mental acuity - Accelerated aging - Eye and facial Tics LMR (low magnesium relationship) - Tourette's syndrome LMR (low magnesium relationship) - Heavy metal poisoning due to low magnesium levels - Oxygen deprivation due to LMR - Compliment to Omega 3-6-9 fatty acids acting as anti-inflammatory being denied due to LML (low magnesium levels)

It is not completely clear what long-term damage is being done to the body by having low levels of magnesium.

Magnesium and Loose Stools

Why do people suffer from loose stools and even diarrhea when taking high quantities of magnesium? This occurs as non digested magnesium acts as a laxative because it has not been converted to ionic form before it enters the digestive system.

Testing for Magnesium levels

Testing for magnesium levels is difficult and current methodology is out dated. So we are left hanging in the balance. Virtually, all magnesium products on the market are not even close to being absorbed intracellular where magnesium needs to do its best work.

The Journal of the American College of Nutrition published an article by Burton B. Silver, Ph.D., in which he makes his point very well concerning the inability of current methodology to measure magnesium levels within the body. Measuring serum magnesium is inaccurate because only 1% of the total body magnesium is found there. According to Dr. Silver, these measurements (serum levels) are of little use because they don't give an accurate status of magnesium levels needed within the body for health benefits. Accurate magnesium levels must be measured in intracellular spaces to attain true levels of magnesium that will then show superior benefits.

Knowing the above information from Dr. Silver is accurate, is another reason we are convinced nano particle ionic magnesium is the best source of magnesium because it is in the form the body uses without biological manipulation before ingestion into cells takes place. Other forms of magnesium not in ionic from must be manipulated into ionic form to go intracellular and into ion channels of cells. Nano particles allow for more particle absorption and increased speed at which these magnesium particles get absorbed.

One concern we should all have when taking life critical minerals, is making sure the proper transit time is observed. If products do not get absorbed they will be excreted.

Various Magnesium Studies

The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolismstates: "Young men taking magnesium can slow bone turnover which is the routine breakdown and rebuilding of bone. Bone turnover is important in postmenopausal women because this process can contribute to bone loss and osteoporosis, a crippling embrittlement of bones."

The University of Graz Medical School in Austria examined the ability of magnesium supplements to slow bone turnover in healthy young men. In that study, 27 to 36 year olds were examined and surprising results were obtained. Magnesium levels in the blood were lower. What a surprise, but the reason for the lower levels was, tissues such as bone were taking up magnesium in a disproportionate share of the biological active form known as ionic form magnesium. The ionic form of magnesium was being transferred intracellular and not staying in the serum. This sort of data validates our research that magnesium needs to be in ionic form for complete utilization.

The Journal of Hypertension reports magnesium supplements offer therapeutic benefits to men with high blood pressure. Even those already taking medicine to control their hypertension saw extra benefits.

Other studies have taken place around the world and one in particular was at the National Cardiovascular Center in Osaka Japan which showed a decrease in the blood pressure levels, especially in men with the highest blood
pressure.

In the journal Headache, March 1996, researchers reported that patients with clustered headaches had their acute headache aborted by magnesium therapy. "In clustered headaches, people suffer up to 20 bouts of pain daily in a single siege that can last for months. A single infusion of magnesium has ended those clustered headaches with some relief in 2 to 7 days. Among those who recovered the fastest were those taking ionic forms of magnesium."

Athletes: studies in Germany involving bodybuilders and long distance runners support the idea that there are great benefits with magnesium therapy. Fewer muscle cramps and greater abilities to perform were discovered. Magnesium affects muscle tissues and low levels of magnesium prevent peak performance in athletes.

Obstetricians: have found the developing placenta and fetus drain maternal stores of magnesium and the bad part is, low levels of magnesium may contribute to cardiovascular problems during pregnancy. In Europe, magnesium therapy is becoming a routine part of obstetric care.

Cellulite: According to Dr. Susan Lark, MD in her newsletter, New Choices the Chemistry of Weight Loss, summer 2001, "Magnesium is critical for getting rid of cellulite. Many of the weight problems I have seen can be cured with magnesium." A British researcher found that 80% of fatigue patients lack magnesium. The reason magnesium is important is, it stops cortisol production, which makes your belly bigger and because it helps convert fatty acids into the anti-inflammatory prostaglandin. Dr. Lark, says she has seen inflammation disappear and women loss 10 pounds in one week.

Chocolate, Diabetes, Low Energy and Fatigue

Chocolate

Cravings for this delicious treat are associated with low levels of magnesium. Magnesium is a mineral lost during menstruation. Women who can't control their weight have found it easier to do so when they can nix the chocolate cravings. Test yourself with the chocolate test. Here it is. On Monday, do not take any magnesium and then eat a piece or two of chocolate and see how it tastes. On Wednesday, take a fair amount of magnesium right before eating the chocolate and notice the difference in how your tasted buds react to the taste of chocolate.

You should notice on the day you took the magnesium before you ate the chocolate that you did not enjoy it as much. On the contrary, when you eat chocolate when low on magnesium, wow! The chocolate tastes better when low on magnesium. We are not saying not to eat chocolate, we are just saying you may be low on magnesium.

Diabetes

Insulin is a hormone, which helps regulate glucose metabolism. Magnesium has been found to improve insulin's response to dietary sugar and improve the action of insulin in regulating blood sugar.

Dr. Hans Nieper, MD: from his extensive research with compromised patients states the following "Magnesium improves the activity of white granulocyte blood cells and increases production of immune-defensive substances such as antibodies and complement factors." Dr. Nieper is an expert in cancer therapy and says there is a correlation between high levels of magnesium and health versus low levels of magnesium and poor health.

Low Energy and Fatigue: Source: USDA / Agricultural Research Service Date: 2004. Most people think of calcium and phosphorus as the most important dietary components for bone health. But magnesium also plays an important role. It is involved in hundreds of biochemical reactions, many of which help keep not only bones strong, but the heart rhythm healthy and the nervous system functioning smoothly.

A study by Agricultural Research Service physiologist Henry C. Lukaski and nutritionist Forrest H. Nielsen reveals important findings on the effects of depleted body magnesium levels on energy metabolism.

Lukaski is assistant director of Agricultural Research Service Grand Forks Human Nutrition Research Center, Grand Forks, North Dakota. He and Nielsen, with the center's clinical nutrition support staff, showed that inadequate magnesium is associated with a need for increased oxygen during exercise.

They found that during moderate activity, those with low magnesium levels in muscle are likely to use more energy and therefore to tire more quickly than those with adequate levels.

The study's first phase provided 10 postmenopausal women with a controlled diet adequate in magnesium for 35 days. In the next phase, a low-magnesium diet provided less than half the recommended daily intake for 93 days. The last phase provided a diet adequate in magnesium for 49 days. The volunteers were subjected to exercise tests at the end of each dietary phase, along with biochemical and physiological tests.

After consuming the low-magnesium diet, volunteers showed a significant overall loss of magnesium. They had lowered muscle levels of magnesium, and their red blood cells were at the low end of the normal range.

The data shows that during the low-magnesium-status phase, the volunteers used more oxygen during physical activity, and their heart rates increased by about 10 beats per minute. " When the volunteers were low in magnesium, they needed more energy and more oxygen to do low-level activities than when they were in adequate-magnesium status," says Lukaski. T he study was published in the May 2002 issue of the Journal of Nutrition.

Heavy Metal Poisoning

Heavy Metal poisoning: Magnesium protects the cell from aluminum, mercury, lead, cadmium, beryllium and nickel. Evidence is mounting that low levels of magnesium contribute to the heavy metal deposition in the brain that precedes Parkinson's, multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer's. It is probable that low total body magnesium contributes to heavy metal toxicity in children and is a participant in the etiology of learning disorders.

Nano Particle Ionic Form Magnesium                                                                   back

Nano Particle Ionic Form Magnesium has the ability to be utilized the most efficiently by the body.

We have discovered the problem now how do we solve it?

We must first understand that certain minerals and magnesium being one of them is absorbed intracellular through what is/are called ion channels to be effective. Otherwise, the magnesium mineral will pass through the digestive track unused. This effect can even cause loose stools.

High absorption magnesium particles can and do allow for the metal ion, magnesium to be utilized and moved inside of the cells where it is most effective.

Just because we ingest something does not mean we are getting what we think.

It must always be remembered that the RDA is an inaccurate measure of what is needed to keep humans alive. It is the best guess with what was established to maintain low levels of sustainable life and that system was invented many, many years ago and is outdated as of today.

Magnesium has never been viewed by any government health agency from around the world as anything more than a mineral. That is ok plus it is not the role of any government agency to dictate therapeutic levels of any mineral to anyone.

It is imperative people take an active role maintaining good health for themselves. If they do not take an active role in their own health what one can expect is an outcome others have for you which may not be what you want for yourself.

Nano Particle Ionic Magnesium was developed to allow for superior absorption thus providing superior benefits. Being in ionic form allows the body to recognize complete cellular inability to absorb this key mineral should have each and every person who reads this article at least try nano particle ionic magnesium. The results may astound you.

We are proud to offer the most efficient magnesium on the market today.

Nano Particle Ionic Magnesium has been tested by a FDA certified Micro Precession Lab to contain nano particle magnesium and magnesium ions.

People with these conditions need Nano Particle Ionic Magnesium:

Trouble sleeping – Diabetes - Muscle spasms - Restless sleep – Asthma - Muscle cramps - Back pain - Kidney disorders - Cellulite – Seizures - Neck pain - Nervousness - Hyperactivity - Headaches - PMS – Depression - High blood pressure - Osteoporosis  - Arthritis - Migraine headaches - Irregular heartbeats – Fatigue - Joint pain - Stroke risk - Chocolate cravings

(3) Magnesium Nano Particle Size

The number of patients and individuals with special needs concerning magnesium supplementation has grown significantly in the past few years,

Much of the research and development of nano / ionic magnesium is based on the works of Robert Recker, M.D., and Nobel Prize winners, Erin Neher and Bert Sakmann, M.D.

Neher and Sakmann are from the Federal Republic of Germany. Dr. Recker’s research work was done at the Creighton Medical School in Omaha, Nebraska.

A Nobel Prize in Physiology / Medicine was awarded to Neher and Sakmann in 1991 for the valuable discovery of ion channels. This was and is a significant breakthrough when considering the human need is for magnesium ions and not for magnesium compounds.

A noteworthy problem with current magnesium supplementation is the lack of proper to complete dissociation of magnesium ions from carrier or bound compounds of magnesium. This noteworthy problem exists with virtually all of the current magnesium supplements on the market today, with few exceptions and certain intravenous magnesium.

A considerable problem with current magnesium supplements is few if any researchers or companies were exploring the need for high-energy dissociation magnesium products. Dr. Gunderson’s proprietary processing methods produce bio-available ion particle magnesium supplements which 100% of magnesium nano / ionic particles are readily available for absorption.

A crucial problem with many current magnesium supplements is the mechanism of action used for dissociation. Often, state-of-the-art magnesium supplements being used or intravenous intervention depends upon the gut, digestive system etc. to generate dissociated ions from magnesium compounds. Compromised patients have severe difficulties using powder magnesium compounds dispensed in capsule or pill form.

A critical problem with current magnesium supplementation other than pre-ionic form magnesium products is the lack of rapid and complete absorption due to inadequate conversion of magnesium compounds to dissociated magnesium ions. Patients and individuals compromised by illness, disease, age-related problems or other unknown factors exacerbate this critical problem of inefficiency.

Side effects by the use of non-dissociated magnesium supplements are a major concern for patients and physicians. Eliminating side effects from magnesium supplement ingestion is a major benefit enjoyed by patients and individuals using nano / ionic magnesium
xml:namespace prefix = v ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:vml" />

BLOOD TESTS
The above graph indicates the small amount of magnesium that is extra cellular compared to the other body stores of magnesium. Unlike calcium and sodium, which are principal extra cellular cations and easy to measure, it is difficult to get accurate and meaningful data concerning magnesium. Therefore, it is prudent to use magnesium supplements that have a high affinity for absorption. Magnesium plays a universal role in biochemistry, enzyme activation, ion transport and hundreds of other functions.

According to the Journal of the American College of Nutrition, Vol. 23, 2004, the following quote is pertinent to Dr. Gunderson’s nano / ionic formula magnesium due to its high affinity for absorption. “ Since only 1% of total body Mg2+ is found in intravascular space, serum levels of Mg2+ give little information about a patients overall Mg2+ status with respect to this mineral”.

PATIENT COMPLIANCE

Ingested magnesium in patients and individuals with compromised health are concerned with side affects when trying to maintain magnesium homeostasis. Compromised patients encounter side affects such as diarrhea and upset stomach with non-ionic products creating an aversion to product ingestion. Patient compliance is minimized when products have side effects as is well known in the medical community. Lack of patient compliance, of course, can lead to escalating health problems.

ABSORPTION

Ingesting appropriate form (ionic) and size (nano) of a magnesium supplement delivers instant absorption with no pre digestion or conversion steps necessary which provides ease in maintaining magnesium levels at cellular sites and creates efficient physiological storage potential for ingested magnesium.

SIDE AFFECTS

With compromised patients and individuals, eliminating side effects is beneficial and helpful to the person taking magnesium supplements. When using nano / ionic low dose high absorption magnesium, side affects are eliminated. By not eliminating diarrhea, other problems are created accompanying the diarrhea such as upset stomach and nausea, electrolyte imbalances etc. especially when taken in large doses.

COMPROMISED PATIENTS

Unfortunately for compromised patients and individuals, high doses of magnesium supplements do not lead to adequate levels of magnesium stores within the body. Most high doses of
non-ionic magnesium create a new set of problems that then need to be dealt with.

To utilize standard magnesium supplements that have been ingested in pill or powder form from carrier compounds, as pointed out in the graph below, takes energy to achieve Active Transport. When any number of factors compromises the body, the reliance on Active Transport is minimized and in some cases virtually eliminated.

According to Munson’s Principles of Pharmacology, page 988, “Magnesium is absorbed both by active transport and by simple diffusion”. This prospect, as noted by Munson’s research group, further enhances the principles put forth by Neher and Sakmann and ion channel discovery.
We are using nano / ionic form magnesium to achieve the fastest, most complete and overall best oral absorption mechanism possible, and with no side affects.

Nano / ionic magnesium can be given at lower doses with greater results. Low dosing and high absorption is made possible due to high-energy dissociation manufacturing methods. Pre dissociated magnesium particles helps practitioners and patients alike.                    Back

“Water-borne magnesium is absorbed 30% better & much faster than dietary magnesium” The University of Missouri Science Center.

POWDER vs IONS & NANO PARTICLES

The Missouri study as mentioned previously, was done and concerned itself with water-born magnesium compared to ingested powder forms of magnesium. The study did not include highly dissociated magnesium ions from nano / ionic formulations, which are more dissociated than any other current product on the market today.

Once a compound is dissolved in water-forming ions, they now become floating ions in water and are not as readily attached to carrier compounds. This concept is well known and does indeed support the theory of why particles need to be reduced to their smallest fraction for best absorption.

Agglomeration vs. de-agglomeration is a point that must be considered when ingesting magnesium supplements. A whole new field of de-agglomeration or creating nano particles now exists. Much new research is being done into understanding the benefits and specifics of de-agglomerated particles. Dr. Gunderson has been involved in this field for several years and has tested many materials including our nano / ionic magnesium in a FDA certified nano scale testing lab. We have enclosed pictures below to demonstrate differences in de-agglomerated and non de-agglomerated materials.

Materials in the pictures below are from a high resolution scanning microscope showing photos of agglomerated and non-agglomerated materials.

Dr. Gunderson’s magnesium has been tested in a FDA Certified Lab of which the results shown in the picture on the right give the range of nano / ionic particle size in GRL’s nano / ionic magnesium product. As can be seen, the de-agglomerated material has more of a scatter or dissociation than that of the material in the picture on the left, which has not been de-agglomerated or dissociated by high-energy dissociation methodology.

Currently GRL has decided to stay with particles that are in the 500nm range. It has been brought to our attention recently, that there could be concerns as to possible harm from using 100nm or less sized particles. The concern is with potentially fast moving particles through the body with high velocity ions potentially causing damage to cells. We do not believe this to be true but until the issue of smaller than 100nm size particles has been conclusively studied and proven safe, GRL chooses to produce small (above 300nm size) but non-controversial size magnesium particles.

There are three main types of diffusion: simple, channel, and facilitated diffusion.xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Our primary means of absorption is through simple diffusion with channel and facilitated absorption also being a factor.

Our magnesium uses ion channels and simple, channel and facilitated diffusion to a greater or lesser degree, which fit the criteria as, described below.

Six things influence the rate of diffusion:

1. Concentration gradient

2. Size of molecule involved
3. Distance the molecule has to travel
4. Temperature
5. Solubility of the molecule
6. Surface area of the membrane over which the molecule can work

Rate of Diffusion = gradient x temp X surface area • solubility
distance • sq. rt. of the molecular mass

SUCCESSFUL RESULTS
GRL has success with transplant patients: A limited number of patients have been using nano / ionic magnesium for over two (2) years with success in a slightly less potent formula than one now available through GRL.

Organ rejection drugs cause variations in the amount magnesium from month to month. As is well documented in the medical community, certain drugs do deplete magnesium levels.

Many factors cause patient demands for magnesium to vary from month to month thus it seems more prudent to use the best form and functional type of magnesium available.

Standard protocols for oral magnesium in pill or powder form have a high incidence of diarrhea and stomach discomfort. Protocols using ionic form of magnesium do not have that problem.

There are thousands of users of our ionic products. The number of repeat users is very high which we feel speaks volumes of the product reliability. Most people notice a difference immediately, which encourages them to continue using our products, which allows for better management of health.

LOW DOSE VS HIGH DOSEN
Nano / ionic magnesium allows for lower doses with zero side affects.

5) Copper, Magnesium, Zinc Levels Tied to Mortality

French researchers have identified links between levels of three metals in the body and the risk of death from cancer or heart disease.

Dr. Nathalie Leone of the Lille Pasteur Institute and colleagues found men with high copper levels had an increased risk of dying over an 18-year period, while high magnesium levels were associated with reduced mortality risk. Low zinc levels seem to add to the effect of the other two elements.

However, the researchers note, it remains unclear whether these metals are actually responsible for these effects or simply markers for cancer or heart disease.

Zinc, copper and magnesium play a number of key roles in the body, for example in the immune response, inflammation and oxidative stress, Leone and her colleagues write in the research journal Epidemiology. To investigate the relationship between body levels of these elements and mortality, the researchers followed 4,035 men aged 30 to 60 for 18 years. During follow-up, 339 men died, including 176 from cancer and 56 from heart disease.

Men with the highest copper levels at the study's outset had a 50 percent increased risk of death from any cause, and a 40 percent greater risk of dying from cancer, compared to men with the lowest levels.

On the other hand, those with the highest magnesium levels had a 40 percent to 50 percent reduced risk of death compared to those with the lowest levels.

Low zinc levels along with high copper levels boosted mortality risk further; men with this combination were 2.6 times more likely to die during the follow-up period than those with low levels of both zinc and copper. Low zinc values combined with low magnesium levels contributed to an increased mortality risk.

High copper levels were tied to older age, smoking and high cholesterol, Leone and her team note, while lower magnesium levels were linked to older age, high blood pressure and diabetes.
Copper can contribute to the formation of damaging free radicals in the body, the researchers note, while low magnesium may also contribute to inflammation.

Low zinc levels may impair immune function, while zinc also shields the body from free radicals. "In this way, decreased zinc and either increased copper or decreased magnesium might synergistically enhance oxidative damage and the inflammatory response," Leone and her team write. "Further studies are needed to confirm the interactions between serum zinc and serum copper or serum magnesium and their potential contribution to the prediction of all-cause, cancer and cardiovascular disease mortality in clinical practice," they conclude.

(6) 2004 Gallup Poll on Magnesium Awareness

Majority of Americans Not Getting Enough Magnesium. Most Not Aware of RDA for Essential Mineral . . . Magnesium is an essential mineral of a healthy diet. It may help to maintain the function of the heart, muscles and nervous system.* However, according to a Gallup poll, four out of five Americans (80%) are not consuming enough magnesium from diet alone. That number may be even higher among those who have certain medical conditions or are taking medications known to deplete magnesium in the body.

Even when including vitamin and mineral supplements together with diet, only about one in three (35%) consume the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) or better of magnesium (between 310 - 420 mg/day). The vast majority of respondents (86%) were not aware of the daily requirement of magnesium at all.

Magnesium is essential for the functioning of more than 300 enzymes. Proper magnesium levels help maintain normal heart rhythms.* It is also necessary for normal protein synthesis, carbohydrate metabolism, proper muscle function and helps to absorb calcium and potassium.*

"It's clear that most people aren't aware of the important role that magnesium plays in the body. If people are concerned about their magnesium levels, they should make sure to discuss medications and health conditions with their doctor when evaluating their diet and magnesium supplement options," said Barbara Levine, R.D., PhD., Associate Professor of Nutrition in Medicine, Weill Medical College of Cornell University-New York Presbyterian Hospital.

The majority of people (53%) surveyed couldn't name a good source of magnesium, which include 100% bran cereals, avocados, almonds, milk, pumpkin seeds, cashews, cooked spinach, sesame seeds, oatmeal, potatoes (baked, with skin) and soy beans. (1)

The body's stores of magnesium can be depleted by certain illnesses or chronic conditions such as extensive bowel resection, intestinal or biliary fistulas, pancreatic insufficiency, celiac disease, ulcerative colitis and Chron's disease. Certain medications, such as loop/thiazide diuretics (water pills) and digoxin, can also affect magnesium levels. Additionally, poorly-controlled diabetes may be a risk factor for depletion of magnesium stores. High alcohol intake and chronic or excessive vomiting or diarrhea can also deplete magnesium.(2)

Ensuring enough magnesium through diet or supplements is important -- and so is making sure that the mineral is absorbed into the body as intended. Supplements containing magnesium chloride allow the body to absorb more magnesium, compared to products that contain magnesium oxide. Not surprisingly, 86% of the survey respondents didn't know difference between magnesium chloride and oxide.

The Gallup Organization conducted a telephone survey of a nationally representative sample of 1,009 American adults 18 years of age or older. Interviews were conducted between January 6-31, 2004. For the results based on sample size, the margin of error at 95 percent confidence interval is +/- 3 percentage points.

Key Findings: Americans increasingly understand the necessity of supplementing their diet with both a multi-vitamin and extra amounts of certain vitamins and minerals. However, magnesium is not a mineral that Americans typically think of as important to their health. The awareness level of health conditions with associated vitamin deficiency is also low. General Awareness: 56% of respondents listed Vitamin C among "most important" among vitamins and minerals . . . 86% of men and women did not know the daily requirement of magnesium.

Percentage of respondents who were aware of health conditions associated with vitamin and mineral deficiency:

Heart disease, including high blood pressure: 47%
Diabetes: 32%
Osteoporosis: 71%
Migraine headaches: 29%
Muscle cramps: 62%

Intake of Vitamin and Mineral Supplements: 51% of men and 66% of women take vitamin and mineral supplements daily. 73% of respondents did not know how much magnesium they take daily.

Four out of five (80%) respondents are below the RDA of magnesium from food intake alone. When evaluating food intake plus supplements, more than three out of five (65%) were below the RDA. Responses, though, varied substantially between men and women. 86% of men were below the RDA of magnesium from food intake alone, and 76% were below the RDA with food plus dietary supplement. 76% of women were below the RDA of magnesium from food intake alone, and 55% were below the RDA with food plus dietary supplement

Intake of Magnesium Supplements Among Patients with Health Conditions -- Percentage of those who were getting the RDA or better of magnesium from food and supplements with the following conditions:

Heart disease - 26% (74% were below the RDA)
Diabetes - 40% (60% were below the RDA)
Osteoporosis - 35% (65% were below the RDA)
Migraine headaches - 42% (58% were below the RDA)

86% of respondents could not tell the difference between magnesium chloride vs. magnesium oxide and the benefits associated with either -- 53% of respondents could not name a good source of magnesium.

Foods which are good sources of magnesium include: 100% bran cereals, avocados, almonds, milk, pumpkin seeds, cashews, cooked spinach, sesame seeds, oatmeal, potatoes and soybeans. Dietary magnesium supplements are also available over-the-counter.
